Upon turning eleven, Hermione was happily surprised to learn that she was a witch and was therefore invited to attend Hogwarts. She was their only child and, although they were "a bit bemused" by the oddities displayed by their daughter, they were known to be proud of her. She made her first appearance in comics in Mad #412. Hermione was originally created by JK Rowling for her Harry Potter series of books, making her first appearance in the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Even though she was of muggle upbringing, she was still an exceptional witch with extraordinary skill even early on. She took to this idea well and spent most of her time in the months leading up to her arrival at Hogwarts memorizing all of the first-year texts. At the age of eleven, she received a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry informing her that she was a witch. She had a comfortable upbringing, and her parents supported their extremely bright, if occasionally odd, child unreservedly.
Born and raised in London, Hermione is the only child of muggle dentists.
